A Trip To See The Folks

Yesterday afternoon I went to Atlanta for a brief visit with my parents and to deliver some premarital material to my niece Haley. She is getting married in July and has asked me to be a part of the wedding.  As I drove to Atlanta I thought about how hard it is for young couples who are getting started in an upside down world. So many are taking their cues from the culture and finding disastrous consequences.  The selfish culture in which we live is so convincing when it tries to tell us to put ourselves first, even in our marriages.   We must learn to live by His principles no matter what the suggestions of society. When I got to my parents’ home yesterday I tried to check the scores of the ballgames. My Dad has a new television and a new remote. I tried to find the games on my own. The result was that we could not get sound on the stations that I wanted to watch.  We could not get it to work the rest of the afternoon. I feel a little bit guilty, but my parents have to understand that’s what happens when you leave a complicated remote lying around when I’m in the house. I’m sure that after two or three service calls he will be able to get it straight once again.

Last night I attended the evening service at First Baptist Woodstock. Jerry Vines preached a powerful message and it was great to spend a little bit of time with Johnny Hunt and Jerry Vines right after the service. As you may know, Johnny Hunt is serving as President of the Southern Baptist Convention and is having a tremendous impact across our country. Despite what we are told by religious surveys, God is still doing some great things among His people. We should constantly be excited about the opportunity to be a part of it.
