How Religious Are We?
A recent Gallup poll reported that 80% of the people in South Carolina say that religion is important in their daily life. These people responded yes to the question, “Is religion an important part of your daily life?” We ranked third behind Mississippi (85%) and Alabama (82%). The report showed that there is a Bible belt that stretches through the south and to Texas and Oklahoma. The national average was 65%.
Before you go thinking how great we are or how religious we are as a nation you must remember that the question did not define religious. People are by nature religious and the definitions can be extremely broad. There is no standard of understanding of doctrine or of spiritual commitment.
There are many people that would equate this with Christianity. This could not be further from the truth. The words “God” and “religion” in general have become very common in our culture. In many places being religious means living right according to local traditions or personal beliefs. It has very little or nothing to do with God and Jesus Christ. The only point this study makes for us is that we have the challenge to reach people who believe they are Christians with the genuine gospel.
What we need in our culture is “Real Change.” It is not enough for us as believers to realize this. We have to do something about it. We are going to see what God’s Word has to say about this starting this Sunday.
