How to Pray for our President
Yesterday was an historic day as we witnessed the inauguration of our first African-American president, Barack Obama. We have always said that anyone could grow up and become the President of the United States. This is a very significant event in the life of our country. There was a tremendous sense of celebration yesterday in our land.
But as our President said in his inaugural address, we are in some difficult times and face some great challenges. As followers of Christ, we are citizens of the kingdom of God first, but we are also urged to pray for those in authority over us. (I Timothy 2:2)
We should be praying for President Obama, his family and his administration. Let me suggest some guidelines as you pray.
- Pray daily for our President and the protection of his family. Ask the Lord to bring them closer together and to guide the President and Mrs. Obama as the parents of those two precious girls.
- Ask the Lord to give him guidance in the decisions that He makes as He leads our country
- When He makes decisions that are contrary to God’s word, ask the Lord to change his heart and to put voices around him that will speak truth into his life. Pray that when we are in opposition that we would do it with the right spirit and in the right way with a constant hope.
- Pray that the Lord will guide his mind and heart in the midst of such a constant flood of information from every direction. (Proverbs 21:1)
- Pray that the people of this country will give him the right kind of support and as is the case with all of our leaders, hold him accountable as we seek to remain true to the Judeo-Christian principles upon which this country was built.
- Each day put your trust in the Lord and pray that he will heal our land and guide us as a people.
We must always remember that our trust must be in the Lord and our desire should be that we as individuals and as a country will honor Him.
