Two Instructors
Yesterday I was talking to a friend of mine who told me that He had just subscribed to two more news channels. He said that he now had about 6 channels where He could find the bad news repeated over and over. I asked him what in the world he was doing. He laughed and said he did not know. It seems that the world always has some more bad news to share with us. That is because we live in a sinful world that is determined to move farther and farther from the Lord.
One writer has said life has given to us two very effective instructors – wisdom and consequences. The wisdom that we find in God’s Word will constantly amaze you while consequences will continually zap our strength.
The cost of learning from consequences is high and constant. Many times we have to pay the price for years to come. Wisdom has a price that is up front and requires that we be obedient. It will instruct you before you make the mistakes. While consequences will make you wait until after you have made the mistakes to teach you the lesson.
It is not possible for us to avoid the consequences of our actions. We can be forgiven and comforted but we still have to learn the lessons that come with the consequences. We can see that in the lives of people around us and we are seeing it in the life of our nation.
We need to be listening for the voice of the Lord as we look to His Word for guidance in all the circumstances of life. When we are seeking to follow His principles, it makes our life more productive and meaningful. One of the two will be your teacher. Which one will you choose?
