Making a Difference in Uncertain Times
September 30th, 2008
We certainly live in very uncertain times. Yesterday the stock market fell by over 775 points. Unless you really take the time, it is very difficult to understand what is happening in our economy. Everyone is talking about it and there is a tendency for people to feel helpless.
As followers of Christ this presents for us a great time of opportunity. We may not know the answer, but there are certainly ways for us to make a difference in the world in which we lives. I saw an example of that this weekend. Dustin Adams was a young man who passed away several months ago in a tragic motorcycle accident. His parents, Boyce and Gail Adams have put their trust in the Lord, even in the midst of tragedy. They made the decision that his passing would not be in vain. This past Sunday the flowers were placed in the sanctuary in honor of Dustin’s birthday. Gail had invited a large number of his friends to be present in the services that day, and many of them were in our College Bible Fellowship class. The Adams have made it a high priority to reach out to these kids and make a difference in their lives. Gayle was telling me about her passion for touching these young people. As I looked up in the balcony and saw that large number of students, I was personally challenged to do a better job of looking for opportunities to touch people in Jesus’ name. It was just another reminder to me that in times of uncertainty and in circumstances where we seemingly to have no control, we can still be about the business of making sure every person has the chance to know Christ.
Right now there are a lot of people who are looking for answers and they won’t find it in economics or the actions of Congress or in the midst of media reports. They will find stability and hope in a relationship with Christ. It is up to us to share it with them.
