Don’t Miss This Point
People are describing Michael Phelps’ winning 8 gold metals as one of the greatest athletic achievements in history. He will take his place with the greatest athletes in the world. Thus far, he is the dominating story of this year’s Olympic games.
This could not have been accomplished without the help of his teammates in the 400 meter relay. It would be hard to find someone that could even name the other three even though the race took place only a few days ago. Aaron Pierson, Brendan Hansen, and Jason Lezak made it possible. Had they not done what they were supposed to do, the whole world would not be talking about Phelps.
After the race I was so impressed with their interviews. They were happy to be a part of history and they were satisfied with the opportunity to do their part.
No matter what your circumstance, age, or ability there is a powerful lesson to be learned here. The world may not be watching our every move, but each of us has the opportunity to do our part and make a difference in the world in which we live.
Nowhere is that more true than in the body of Christ. That is exactly we have been talking about this summer. God gives each of his children the opportunity to play an important part. If you cannot see that lesson in the 400 meter relay, you have missed one of the most important parts of the games.
I expect that this athletic achievement will stand for many years. They say that Phelps was made for this type of competition and it will be very difficult to top his performance. But don’t forget Pierson, Hansen and Lezak. They made sure it happened.
What they did is a part of a sport but what we can do as a part of the body of Christ has eternal value. We may not be challenged to go out and jump in the pool but we should be challenged to make the difference with the abilities and opportunities that He gives to us.
