American Religion
The Pew Forum on Religion and Public life has just come out with a survey of 35,000 Americans about religious preference. It is an extensive study.
Most Americans (78.4%) identify themselves as some type of Christian. There is a protestant majority (51.3%), but according to the study that will soon become a minority.
Evangelicals make up the largest group of Christians (26.3%) but there is a lot of movement among various parts of the Christian faith. The trends will have a greater impact on the slide of our culture in terms of faith and values.
The study gives information on the basis of age, race, education, income, geographical area and several other areas. It is a lot of information but there are some factors they cannot account for.
You cannot believe what people tell you. If 26.3% of the adults in this country were evangelical Christians in practice, we would be a different country.
People are searching for a relationship with God in a meaningful way and religion is causing them to come up short.
There is a great deal of responsibility and opportunity for those of us that are followers of Jesus.
We can spend out time thinking about what is happening in America but we should be concentrating on sharing our faith with those around us. Most of the people in our area would say they have some type of religious background, when in reality they would like to know the truth. This gives us the chance to tell our story. No matter where you live or work, there is someone near you that needs to hear your story. Why don’t you share it with them?
