It Does Make a Difference

This week was the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.  This decision by the Supreme Court in 1973 has contributed to massive change in our society.  We have taught our people that they have no real purpose.  We have devalued human life.  We now act as if we come from nowhere and we are going nowhere.  Abortion is the ultimate act of humanism.  In our culture it redefines our existence and reduces our importance as human beings.

Randy Alcorn describes what we are teaching our children.  “You are the descendant of a tiny cell of primordial protoplasm that washed up on an ocean beach ten billion years ago.  You are the blind and arbitrary product of time, chance, and natural forces.  You are a mere grab-bag of atomic particles. . . flying through lifeless space with no purpose, no direction, no control, and no destiny but final destruction. . .  In short, you came from nothing, you are going nowhere, and you will end your brief cosmic journey beneath six feet of dirt, where all that is you will become food for bacteria and rot with worms.”

We should not be surprised when our kids in our culture are losing a sense of their purpose.  We need to be reminded that we are created in the image of God.

Alcorn again writes,

“From the moment of conception you and all other human beings are the special creation of a good and all powerful God.  You are the climax of his creation, the magnum opus of the greatest artist in the universe.  You are created in his image, with capacities, to think, feel, and worship that set you above all other life forms.  You differ from the animals not simply in degree, but in kind, in your very essence. . . If you are willing to accept the free gift of salvation. . . your destiny is to live forever in a magnificient kingdom, to reign with Christ over the universe.  You will forever enjoy the wonders of his presence and the marvels of his creations.  You will spend eternity in intimate and joyful fellowship with your beloved Lord and your precious family.”

What we believe about the origin and importance of life makes a huge difference in the way that we perceive all of life.  It is the basis of all that we believe.
