It’s Going in Every Direction

Last night I spent some time watching the New Hampshire primary returns.  I think most people would say this is the wildest election cycle we have ever seen.  We have 24/7 analysis, exit polls, entrance polls, focus groups, trend studies, and a world of sites giving us the “inside information.”  We are told that we have “accurate data” that tells us that men between the age of 27 years, 4 months and 29 years, seven months who live on the right side of the street, declare pizza as their favorite food, are voting for the first time and watched Star Trek when they were a kid will vote a certain way.    The candidates are declaring their message, retooling their message, shaping their message, dropping their message, rephrasing their message, staying on message and getting off message at the same time.

I don’t know how it happened but when I listened to the candidates, I discovered that somehow all of them won last night.  Then all of the networks tried to tell me who really won in a number of different ways.  The spin is unbelievable!

A lot of this takes place because we do not know who we are as a people.  We talk about politics over principle, position over purpose.  All of this is a reminder to the follower of Christ that while we should be involved in the process, we must stay focused on the principles and values that we find in scripture.

Every politician says that they want to make a difference.  That is certainly the party line.  We are not running for office but God has called us to make a difference for the Lord Jesus.  When we walk with Him we truly have a chance to make a difference.  We are in a world full of opportunity and you don’t need to a poll to tell you what to do next.
