Happy New Year
This morning I am doing what most people do to some extent. I am thinking about all the possibilities of the year to come. There are so many things that I did not get accomplished in 2007, but am always reminded of the words in Philippians 3:13-14. “Brothers, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus.”
There are many wonderful moments and memories that I cherish about 2007, but I also have great expectations for 2008! This is a time for us to grow, to be more effective and productive than we have ever been. I want to do more with the ability and opportunity that God has given to me. I believe that the best is yet to be.
That does not mean that we do not face challenges. The challenges that you had last night are probably still there this morning. But we serve a risen Savior and He has a purpose for us in this world.
As you begin this new year let me encourage you to do two things.
Make the commitment to make this year count for Him. I know that is a big challenge, but if you do not make the commitment early, you cannot know the victory of serving Him.
Decide now that you will not let the distractions that will surely come rule your life. I constantly see people that have tremendous ability and potential lose a great opportunity because of the distractions of life. I am not saying they are not hard or even important. I am saying you have to keep your focus on what brings honor to the Lord.
That may seem very general and simplistic to you but I have found that this is the place where we have to start. No matter what the circumstance, we must “reach forward.”
I am looking forward to Sunday. It is the first Sunday of the new year. You do not want to miss it. It is going to be a great day!
