The Newborn Scoring System

Recently I read about Dr. Virginia Apgar.  Many years ago she developed the Newborn Scoring System.  It is used to evaluate a new baby in five separate areas to determine if he or she is healthy.  The system checks heart rate, respiratory rate, response to physical stimulation, muscle tone, and color.  This simple system has made a worldwide impact on saving babies lives.  It does not cost anything and it is not very complex, but it causes medical professionals to use their powers of observation to get an idea whether the baby may have some difficulties that need to be addressed immediately.  Many times it has saved the life of an infant.

So many times we look at people and we do not take the time to really observe what is happening.  We are too busy doing our own thing.  All of us have been guilty of that.  As a result we miss the opportunity to touch people with the love of Christ.

How can we tell what is going on?  Let me suggest several things that we need to observe as we interact with people.

What are their priorities?
How do they spend their time?
What do they talk about most of the time?
How do they handle resources?
How are they treating other people?
What type of burden are they carrying?
Sometimes the last one is the hardest one to spot.  All of these have to do with a person’s relationship to the Lord Jesus.

Many are walking around with some type of religious label and yet they are in great distress.  We can make a difference in the lives of people around us if we will make sure that He is the priority in our lives and then simply pay attention.  You will be amazed at the opportunities that God gives to you to share your story.
