Touching Those We Love

People are constantly talking to me about the salvation of their parents or grandparents.  They are concerned because there seems to be no evidence of a relationship with the Lord.  Perhaps they have a religious background, but they are not seeing any fruit in the lives of those that they love so much.  They want to talk to them about it, but they do not know how to get started.  They are afraid that they will offend them or appear disrespectful.  They don’t want to risk damaging a relationship that means so much to them and yet, they want to be sure about their walk with God.

My grandparents are with the Lord now, but many years ago, I made it a point to talk to them about their relationship with the Lord.  I was relieved to know that they were sure about their relationship with the Lord.  But I vividly remember how difficult it was for me to bring up the subject.  Talking to close family members about the Lord can be one of the most difficult situations that you face.  It is always hard to get started.

The other day I was talking to someone about this subject and they gave me a fantastic idea.  They were concerned about an older member of the family and did not know how to approach them.  This man decided to go to this person and get them to share the story of their life.  He took the time to write it down in order that the grandchildren would know their grandfather’s life story.  My friend told me that he learned all types of things about this man that he had not known.  It was so interesting and this provided future generations of the family a clear picture of this man they loved so much.

During this time, my friend took this opportunity to talk to him about his spiritual life.  He was relieved to find that he had a salvation testimony.  I have found that many people have had that personal relationship with the Lord, but do not know how to tell the story.  This is an indictment on a Christian culture that has not taught people how to tell their story.

This turned out to be a great tool for making sure this person was saved.  I told him it was a great idea and that I was going to recommend it to others.  It is an easy, meaningful and effective way to deal with a sometimes frightening situation.  I would encourage you to use it.  I believe you will find it to be a great blessing.

This also emphasizes the importance of us being able to tell our story.  Every follower of Christ has a powerful story to tell and we should not be shy about it.  Our summer program is going to help all of us in that area.  We will see many people share their story for the first time this summer and it will be exciting to see how God uses it.  You are going to be amazed how easy it is to do.
