A Nation Divided
If you watched the state of the Union last night you got a good look at “politics as usual. As our president spoke to our nation on the state of the union, I was impressed with the desire of our president to lead our nation in a positive way during a very difficult time. Our world is a very complicated place with many difficult challenges. It is our responsibility to pray for our president. We should make sure that we fulfill that responsibility.
As you watched the speech and listened to the commentators you could see all the politicians on both sides of the aisle jockeying for position. Some of them had been in the chamber for more than an hour just so they could be in the right spot to be seen on television. Some of these are the most vocal critics of the president. They have never sided with him but in they will do anything they can to be seen shaking his hand on the tube. Some of our leaders are doing a magnificent job of showing us the meaning of hypocrisy. That is certainly not true for all of them. We have a number of wonderful leaders in our government, but we also have those that are playing the game of political power.
At times during the speech, you would see one side giving an ovation while the other side sat still. It was a picture of a very divided congress. I personally do not believe that the American people are as divided as our congress.
All of this is a reminder that many of the solutions to the problems that face us as a nation will not be found in the political process.
Where will be find those solutions? We will find them in a renewed commitment to the Lord. We will not find answers in the arrogance of human ideas. It is time for America to return to a dependence on the Lord. That will not begin in Washington but in the house of the Lord. It begins in the lives of people like you and me.
This may seem strange to you but as I watched the speech I was reminded of the importance of what hundreds of our people are doing in “The Call to Follow Christ.” We are to make a difference. We are to be salt and light. That begins as we walk closer to Him.
Pray for our President. Pray for our leaders. But pray that God will use us as individuals and as a church to be a shining light for Christ regardless of the political situation.
