A Baby Supermarket

The Abraham Center of Life in San Antonio is a fertility clinic that has taken an incredible step.  They will provide already created embryos for sale to prospective parents after they have studied the traits of the egg and sperm donors.

Prospective parents receive pictures of the donors as babies and sometimes as adults along with medical reports and family histories.  The embryos have been evaluated medically to assure their quality.

The Baptist report that I read said that the male donors had to be college educated, and most of the female donors have attended college.  According to the Associated Press, Center director Jennalee Ryan asked, “Who wants an ugly, stupid kid?”

Every child is created in the image of God.  There is no such thing as “an ugly, stupid kid.”

Our culture is taking yet another step in the wrong direction.  Children are a gift from God, not something to be chosen at a supermarket.  In Psalm 139 the Bible says, “For you formed my inward parts;  you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.  I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

This is not about someone trying to help infertile couples have a child.  As someone involved in that process many years ago, I know how valuable that it is.
This process has gone way past that.  It is about producing embryos that are made to order.  Medical science can be a wonderful thing but God did not mean for us to take responsibility for the details of creation.  Parenting is supposed to be about the kids, not just pleasing the parents.

We now live in a world where we want to have the freedom to design the child that we want  and take the take life of the one we don’t.
