Career Minded

We are a career minded people.  We live in a culture that tries to convince us that we will find meaning in what we do vocationally.  There are some statistics that tell us that is not true.

  • Unhappiness on the job affects one-fourth of the American work force.
  • One-fourth of employees view their jobs as the number one stressor in their lives.
  • Seven out of ten people are neither motivated nor competent to perform the basics of their job.
  • Forty-three percent of employees feel anger toward their employers often or very often as a result of feeling overworked.

They tell us that 70 percent of us go to work without much enthusiasm or passion.  Instead of making a difference we find that we are just getting by.

You are not going to find fulfillment in a job alone.  The Lord provides you with a vocation in order that you might be able to do something for Him either in the workplace or in another area of your life.  When you realize this about your life, it makes it easier to deal with vocational struggles.  How can we keep this perspective?

1.  Remember that He is the Lord of your total life.

2.  Recognize that your vocation is a mission field where you can be a witness and make a difference.

3.  Remember your job is the way God provides for you as you participate in ministry elsewhere.

4.  Know that God has given you abilities and relationships to use for His glory.

When you realize that your job is a part of bringing glory to God, it makes it easier to go to work.
